Resting on pillars during the culmination of the InvestMaryland Challenge were three ivory-colored grand prize awards, swirling upward like the leaves of a springtime perennial and topped with the symbols of each winning company’s industry.
While the awards went to a trio of Maryland’s most innovative early-stage businesses, the awards’ creators, Jessica Searfino and Amanda Paunil, likewise felt honored to see their designs showcased at the event.

“One of the main points behind the design was to imitate a seed growing,” Searfino said. “I hope when they see the award, they look back on the growth of their startup, and remember the creativity that fostered the growth. I also hope it inspires them to guide other entrepreneurs intrerested in growing their own startups.”
Paunil, who also assisted in creating the GBTC Tech Night award in fall 2012, described the delicate process of constructing the awards using “layers of plaster binded in the machine.”
“It’s about the power of startups,” Paunil said. “I hope it inspires the InvestMaryland Challenge winners to keep doing what they’re doing and and keep opening their eyes to new technology.”
