From yellow fin tuna to tiramisu, Gordon Food Service has developed a reputation for its comprehensive offering of foods and service supplies. A vast clientele of restaurants, schools, hospitals, caterers and even cruise ships have helped the company become the largest family-controlled food service distributor in North America.

Gordon Food Service is now planning to open a new distribution center in Aberdeen, Maryland, filling an existing 242,000-square foot space. The center is expected to create 150 jobs within the first three years of operation. The new facility will join 22 other distribution centers throughout the United States and Canada, company officials announced Wednesday.

The company chose Aberdeen in part because of its easy access to Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia markets.

“We are excited to add the Aberdeen location to our distribution network. This facility is in a prime location for us to continue to grow our business in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States,” Jim Gordon, CEO of Gordon Food Service, said in a statement.

Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development Secretary Dominick Murray praised the company’s plans for expansion and job creation.

“We welcome Gordon Food Service to Maryland and look forward to working with them as they grow and create jobs in our State,” Secretary Murray said. “Maryland is ideal for food service distribution, offering an outstanding transportation infrastructure, central location to all major East Coast cities and overnight trucking access to one-third of the U.S. population.”
