Medifast: Getting Healthy at the Harbor

Brian Kagen, MedifastSince 1980, Medifast of Owings Mills has provided healthy living products and programs to its customers. This summer, the company is expanding its local outreach by teaming up with Baltimore’s Waterfront Partnership to provide free wellness programming for Baltimore City and community residents.

Brian Kagen, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Medifast, sat down with MDBizNews to discuss the partnership and Medifast’s goals for the program.

How was the Waterfront Partnership and Medifast collaboration formed?

Over the past several years, Medifast has been expanding our scope to continue our focus on weight-loss and weight management while we add new products and programs to promote an overall healthy living approach. When we were contacted by Waterfront Partnership to join them in the Wellness Series, it was a natural fit. We both share the joint mission to provide long-term health and wellness in our community.

How will Medifast’s involvement in the Wellness Series impact the program?

In addition to the free fitness classes offered throughout the summer, Medifast will provide our “Get Healthy at the Harbor” programming, including health information sessions and cooking demonstrations, to be held on select weekends during this year’s series.

At the health information sessions, Medifast dietitians and our behavioral specialist will cover an array of topics including “Maximizing Your Hydration Status” and “How to Handle Stress.” Additional programming will feature Celebrity Chef, LaCakerie Owner, and Medifast success story Jason Hisley leading cooking demonstrations. Chef Hisley will provide tips and free samples of his wholesome and healthy recipes that were created just for Medifast. All of Medifast’s “Get Healthy at the Harbor” programming is free for participants.

By adding the nutritional piece to the already popular fitness program, we hope to make an even larger impact on the health and wellness of Baltimore residents.

How is Medifast looking to make a difference?

There are a rising number of overweight and obese Americans and the numbers are continuing to grow. Our mission is to provide a greater awareness of the importance of preventative health and help people make better and more informed nutrition choices. This summer, we hope we can support Waterfront Partnership to grow the series and help even more Baltimore residents take the first steps toward a healthier lifestyle.

What other ways is Medifast involved in the Maryland community?

d69.class-3Medifast is a proud Maryland manufacturer and has a great history of giving back to the community through employee support and charitable contributions. This year we established a Community Impact program to provide additional opportunities for our employees to volunteer at area organizations. These opportunities allow Medifast and our employees to build meaningful relationships outside of the office while also giving back to the community.

So far this year, through our Community Impact program, our employees have volunteered at The Maryland Food Bank, Johns Hopkins Believe in Tomorrow House, and participated in a corporate kickball tournament benefiting Playworks Maryland. Coming up later in the year, groups from Medifast will partner with Rebuilding Together Baltimore to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners in Baltimore.

How can others get involved?

Any company, big or small, can make an impact in our community. Start by identifying an organization or cause that aligns with your company’s philosophies and mission. Then, figure out what you can offer based on your company’s resources, whether it is providing manpower, product, services or monetary support. There are so many ways to help.

What’s next for Medifast?

As Medifast continues to evolve into a healthy living company, we will expand our product and program offerings and provide weight loss, weight management, and healthy nutrition solutions to consumers through our many support options. We are committed to helping as many people as we can achieve their health and wellness goals while we grow our business and continue to be a strong corporate citizen.
